People always ask us “exactly how does a power inverter work?” The answer to this question often surprises our customers. Car power inverters work much more simply than mysteriously, and the learning curve required to understand them requires no more than a very basic knowledge of electricity. Essentially, there are two forms of electrical power in the Universe: Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC). Direct current flows continuously from the positive electrical pole to the negative electrical pole. Alternating current flows back and forth between the two poles. DC current occurs in Nature and batteries, while AC current is man-made and supplies power through the public utility grid that supports human industry and infrastructure.

Car batteries presented a problem in the past when people realized they needed to operate traditionally AC-powered devices in their cars but could not do so because of incompatible current requirements. Manufacturers like Vector stepped up to solve this dilemma by working to design car power inverters that would safely and efficiently convert DC to AC. Their successful engineering has resulted in a wide range of compact, rectangular devices that connect to batteries and output the resulting alternating current safely through one or more standard electrical plugs.

Two factors determine how a power inverter works: wave output and wattage output. Wave output describes the physical appearance of electrical signals as they move across an oscilloscope. Square waves appear exactly as their name specifies: like squares on a grid. Pure sine waves, also called true sine waves, appear as visible waves on the screen. Sine wave car power inverters work better than square wave power inverters when uninterrupted power flow is a critical issue. In fact, true sine output is sometimes slightly superior to that of public utility power grids! Because of this, they are also the most expensive devices of their kind on the market.

Recent advances in technology have accommodated users on a budget with a hybrid design generally referred to as either a modified square or modified sine wave power inverter. The technical differences that determine how a true sine car power inverter works and how a modified sine power inverter works are too minor to produce any noticeable effects with standard electronics. Only the most high-end equipment requires true sine output, and the cost of these devices may justify the additional investment in pure sine technology to deliver maximum quality and reliable performance.

Another new development that allows car power inverters to work with even more reliability than ever before is the sophisticated Soft Start Technology, branded “SST” by manufacturers such as Vector. SST is the next step in the evolution of how power inverters work. The very first power inverters for cars would only work intermittently during cold engine starts. Because they could not pull enough power from the battery, they would shut down from current underload and require a manual restart. SST resolves this issue by gradually increasing voltage ramp up during engine startup. If the output dips for any reason, SST makes instant adjustments to compensate and will prevent most shutdowns. If in the rare event a shutdown does occur, the newer car power inverters work automatically to restart themselves without distracting the driver from the road.

This article focuses on planning and installing a residential home wind power generation system, not as much on how a wind energy system works.

Wind power generation, an alternative and renewable energy source, has seen a dramatic increase in the last few years. Technological advances make it more and more feasible to install wind power generators for individual homes. The newer systems are more efficient and quieter.

Not every geographical location however, is suited for installing a wind power generator. A consistent wind, with average speeds of approximately 11 miles per hour is required to make a wind energy system feasible. Lower wind speeds can be suitable for battery charging and water pumping in your remote weekend cottage.
Wind availability maps are published by the US National Renewable Energy Lab. You can get a general idea from these maps if you are living in a state and county with sufficiently high winds.

Once you confirm this, you will need to also check if your exact location experiences the required, consistent average wind speeds. If your home, your property is located on the side of a hill, your sheltered location might not provide the required wind speeds. Maybe you can install the wind turbine high enough, to just extend it over the ridge. You will then possibly be able to pick up sufficient wind.

Local wind maps, can also be found at the National Renewable Energy Lab. These maps howver, are not very easy to read and understand. Fortunately though, you can simply contact a wind power manufacturer, such as those listed in the American Wind Energy Association website. They can tell you if it is feasible to install a wind power generator for your home.

At this point, just get some general information about the feasibility of installing a wind power system for your home. You have some more checking to do, before you spend a lot of your and the manufacturer’s time on details.

Next step is to check the local codes and requirements. Your town might have some bylaws, or if you live in a subdivision, there might be restrictions in place, that will not allow you to install a wind power generator for your home. Don’t let that deter you! Get a petition going in your town or city to change the bylaws.
Talk to the neighbor hood association. Who knows, maybe the whole subdivision will end up supporting a wind power generator for all the homes!

Don’t forget to also talk to your neighbors. Unfortunately, some people still believe that all wind energy generators are noisy and kill birds. Inform the neighbors as you investigate and learn more.
Once you know that no local laws, regulations, neighbors or neighbor hood associations will stop you, it is time to talk to the manufacturers again.

I recommend talking to at least two different wind power manufacturers with different types of rotors, such as horizontal propeller blades, or vertical ‘egg beater’ blades. Each of these has advantages and disadvantages. You want to make sure that the type of system you end up installing is the best for your particular application.

Ask the manufacturer a lot of questions, such as:

How much clearance is required around the tower and rotor blades?

How tall will the wind tower be?

What are the noise emissions? Do they have certified sound data?

How many installations have they done? Can you go see one?

What output can you expect from their system?

What is the installed cost per kilowatt-hour?

What kind of warranties do they provide?

What will they need from you to do to make it happen? (besides money)

Will they apply for the required permits?

Will they make the connection to the electric grid?

Will you have to hire a general contractor?

Compare all the answers between the different models and manufacturers and then you can make an educated decision.

A handful of States provide some incentives for installing small wind power systems. Check with your state and local governments. Another option could be to get a reduced-rate mortgage for adding the wind power system. Check with your mortgage company or mortgage broker.

If you find after doing all this research, that wind power is not the solution for you, then maybe a solar photovoltaic system is your solution.

I do hope that you will be able to install either a solar energy system or a wind power generator for your home.

Did You Know? Home Wind Power Kits Can Help You Save Money and Preserve Your Natural Environment

Defining wind power and wind power kits
How is wind, a variety of solar energy, generated? The answer may be attributed to several ecology-related reasons. Different parts of the earth have differences in air temperatures. This is because, the uneven nature of earth’s surface result in the sun heating up the earth by unequal amounts. This hot air, being lighter follows a convectional movement upwards. This creates a hollow in the lower parts of the atmosphere, which gets occupied by the cold air drifting in from nearby areas. Such movement of air is termed ‘wind’. These movements generate a type of motional, or kinetic, energy. Wind energy is obtained from this kinetic energy, which is converted by modern, sophisticated machines. The various equipments for tapping wind power and generating electricity are collectively termed ‘home wind power kits’.

What are the advantages of home wind power kits?
Concerns regarding the increasing rates of environmental pollution are being voiced all over the world. This pollution is often caused by the traditional fossil fuel energy sources. The prices of these sources are becoming too high as well. Hence, wind energy is gaining acceptance all over the world, and for different purposes as well. The existing modern, dynamic techniques are ideal for optimal harnessing of wind power, with help from the home wind power kits. The renewable nature of wind energy is a major benefit, as is the fact that no pollution is caused due to usage of wind energy. Regeneration of electricity systems is certainly possible by using these kits. Hence, the demand for the latter is on a high. People should, however, patiently learn and understand how these kits actually work. This, though, is a rather easy task.

Drastic reduction in electricity charges is one of the primary attractive features of wind power. While wind energy kits can bring down electric bills by around fifty per cent on average, such reduction in the bills can even go up to even ninety per cent, provided the home wind power kit performs really well. Surplus generation of electricity is also possible, in case a house is located in a suitable place. These unutilized amounts can be sold to local owners of utility, in order to earn some cash. Convenience and ease of usage are common features of all wind turbines. All these turbines have two or three blades that are attached to a distinct rotor. The rotor then is connected to the principal shaft, which, in turn, helps to rotate the turbine. This entire process generates electricity. A height of around 100 feet (i.e., 30 meters) is generally recommended for setting up these wind turbines, since higher altitudes ensure continuous and unlimited wind flowing to the latter. Individuals can easily assemble the parts of a turbine on their own Alternatively they can take help from wind power workshops, books on this subject, and can also access online help.

Working advantages and downsides of home wind power kits:
All over the world, the prices of the traditional sources of power are escalating. In this scenario, wind energy offers a much more affordable source of energy. Hence, it is hardly surprising that people are using wind energy and home wind power kits, and that too for various purposes. The growing popularity of wind power kits can be attributed to their cost-effectiveness, power-saving characteristics, and their eco-friendly nature. These kits never produce any harmful greenhouse gases that might pollute the air and contribute to global pollution. Indeed, in the face of these substantial benefits, there are hardly any disadvantages of wind power systems.

A few thousand dollars is initially required, for installing the home wind power kits. This figure looks rather high at the first glance. However, compared with the manifold long run benefits of these kits, as well as the potential adverse effects of other alternative energy sources, this price is actually a rather reasonable one. All possible queries regarding installation can be solved by consulting the users’ manual that accompanies these wind power kits. Technical help is offered by many of the dealers; installation procedures are explained too in many such related websites. With its relative cheapness in use, as well as the large number of benefits wind power promises, demand for the latter is growing by the day.

Prior to setting up your home wind power kit, you should always refer to an instruction manual, so that you can know how to correctly set up the kit, and in which part of the house you should do so for the best results. You will also be able to know the source for free batteries and the ways to get the other components of the kit at reasonable prices. The way to wire the system as well as the necessary security precautions should is also included in the manual. After carefully going through all this in the manual, you can easily install your wind power kit and benefit from this.
